Ask HN: Could startups stop the drug war, or do we need non-profits?
I'm wondering if stopping the drug war and improving criminal justice require non-profit companies.
Advantages of for-profits:
> 1. Focus. Non-profits inherently have a bifurcated business model: raising $ on the one hand, accomplishing their mission on the other hand. Rarely can you find an organization good at both.
> 6. Built-in Scaling Mechanism. In for-profit, if the idea is good, it scales, and if it's not, it dies. Whereas non-profits tend to live forever, rarely getting larger or dying altogether.
Hypothetical experiment: If you were a philanthropist and could only fund for-profits, but you wanted to stop the drug war, would there be anything worth funding?
