So this requires maintaining an out-of-tree kernel module? Does it require rooting on android? I find OpenVPN plenty fast for personal use (with adjusted send/receive buffers and AES-NI on the server)

In practice DKMS works well and is automated in many distros. You just notice updates take a bit longer as the WireGuard kernel module is built. I believe you can use wireguard-go on android, which doesn't require a kernel module.
