I think a lot of the HN community seems themselves too much like grand inventors. Prometheus bringing fire down from the mountain ignorant of the future of war, gun powder, and bombs. My career in technology has taught me its a lot more obvious. When your marketing team start buying massive collected data, or your sales team starts selling ad data to 3rd parties. We know things happen, and the grey morality of it. Yet we turn our backs to it. The reason I think HN is so quick to jump on these topics is because if we search ourselves we see that our morals rarely stand up to our self-proclaimed ideals. Jobs are sometimes hard to find, stability is nice, and dying on that hill doesn't always seem important. Those are negative societal consequences we are most dishonest about it. Not Promethean illusions of grandeur.
