It's more than just a messenger, and if you venture into its bigger world you'll see an ad on some pages, but for things within the app. IAP would be premium stickers, games, and making international calls(google LINE OUT, it has decent rates). I don't recall ever seeing a 3rd party ad. I use LINE strictly as a messenger - if you do this, you will never see an ad. I do get a random message from LINE USA every month or two letting me know of some event, but that's about it and I can live with it.
