I compared them all at one time. Encrypted by default was a must, the rest were excluded.
Signal - Featureless
Telegram - Not encrypted by default, and controversial encryption
Wire - Really liked Wire, but it had a bug of not doing push notifications correctly. Many missed messages until opening the app manually and seeing them.
Viber - No real complaint with Viber I guess, I don't quite remember why I didn't like it.
LINE - This is what I settled on. Nice interface, customizable, same encryption as WhatsApp/Signal/etc, voice and video also encrypted E2E, everything worked flawlessly. I wish more Americans used it.
In the end, LINE was the winner. That said, if Wire were to fix the issues I had with them, I would choose it instead. I really like the fact that you can use multiple devices with Wire, which is the only one that let's you do that.
- poisonarena 8y agoTried to get my Whatsapp group to switch to LINE when I visited Japan this summer, because I liked the interface and all the stickers, but unfortunately it didn't stick :(
- axaxs 8y agoOh yes I didn't even mention the stickers! As an adult I thought I'd never use such childish things, but my wife and I abuse them all the time and find them absolutely hilarious. That's probably a big reason I convinced her to switch.
- crtasm 8y agoI had the same problem with Wire, it prompted me to move to Signal. It has giphy gifs/stickers, emoticons and basic sketching now if those were features you desired. LINE I've not heard of. Play store says it contains adverts and IAP. Is the 'lite' version good enough (it doesn't mention ads)?
- axaxs 8y agoLINE is a bit weird. It's more than just a messenger, and if you venture into its bigger world you'll see an ad on some pages, but for things within the app. IAP would be premium stickers, games, and making international calls(google LINE OUT, it has decent rates). I don't recall ever seeing a 3rd party ad. I use LINE strictly as a messenger - if you do this, you will never see an ad. I do get a random message from LINE USA every month or two letting me know of some event, but that's about it and I can live with it.
- 24gttghh 8y ago>Signal - Featureless Come now. Signal has group chats, document sharing, built-in GIF searching (GIPHY), disappearing messages, encrypted calling (video and/or voice), oh and the most important feature: text messaging.
- Markoff 8y agocan it send more than one picture at once? that's pretty basic feature for many if not majority of users
- reitanqild 8y agoSounds awesome. Who pays for it? (Honest question, I burned myself on WhatsApp.)
- reitanqild 8y agoTo answer my own question: it seems it is based on donations.
- axaxs 8y agoKeep in mind I tested these at the same time. TBH I don't remember when, probably in late 2016/early 2017. I distinctly remember Signal's video chat wasn't good, and you couldn't reposition it on the screen. Lack of stickers, a doodle pad, etc. Featureless was a harsh word, but compared to it's competitors, it's not a reach.
- reitanqild 8y ago> Telegram - Not encrypted by default, and controversial encryption While Telegram annoy me more and more by some of their crypto moves this just isn't true and we should stop spreading this lie. Please help me stop this idea that only E2E is crypto. For examples of not encrypted data, look at telnet and plain http, they are unencrypted protocols and anyone can read the content as it passes over their network.
- axaxs 8y agosorry, i didn't understand your point. Which part are you saying isn't true? If it's about 'encrypted' vs 'e2e encrypted' I apologize as I was vague, but did preface it with the fact only e2e would be considered.
- reitanqild 8y ago> I compared them all at one time. Encrypted by default was a must, the rest were excluded. > ... > Telegram - Not encrypted by default, and controversial encryption Here's what I see. Encrypted by default seems to be what you wrote, not e2e. There's enough problems with Telegram that we don't need to lie to create new ones ;-)
