- mjevans 8y agoIt would seem that things are not so simple. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APNG https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APNG It's rather unfortunate that the apng file extension wasn't adopted instead.
- Osiris 8y agoThe article mentions that MNG supports sprites and commands for movement, which would make animations not only take up less storage space in the file but also much crisper.
- helb 8y agoAPNG won, yet the web is still full of GIFs… It seems to be supported by all major modern browsers except Edge: https://caniuse.com/#feat=apng https://caniuse.com/#feat=apng
- taneq 8y agoA growing proportion of those "gifs" are actually webm now, so it's not that bad...
- johnchristopher 8y agoAnd a pain to download :/ (looking at you giphy).
- taneq 8y agoAlso Facebook / imgur / giphy need to get their stuff sorted with linking and embedding clips. It seems totally random whether a direct link to a given video from imgur will embed as an auto-playing video, a thumbnail plus link, or a bare link.
- sp332 8y agoIE 11 is a major modern browser. It's still supported and has more users than Edge and Safari combined.
- BurningCycles 8y agoI've never come across a .APNG file in the wild, do you know of any sites using the format ?
- MrEldritch 8y agoI think I've seen an actual .apng maybe ... once?
- eridius 8y agoI haven't noticed one on a website. But I know iMessage uses APNG for animated images, and every major browser besides Edge supports APNG.
