My first major project was setting up a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) accessible from the Internet. I knew how to write basic HTML in Notepad and view it in a browser, but the process of installing Linux on an old laptop, setting up the stack, and learning how to port forward through double-NAT was a tremendous accomplishment for myself. I even setup dynamic DNS and had a free domain name. Today a LAMP stack isn't too impressive, but starting somewhere is important, even if it's small.
