Amen to every word except this sentence. "Better choices should be made by web developers to not ship this bullshit in the first place."
No developer I know, web or otherwise, wants to do any of this, and all of them are religious in their use of ad blockers and autoplay stoppers.
This is the kind of stuff developers are forced to do with guns to their heads by the PMs and marketing teams that actually determine the user experience.
- hsljekskfh 8y agoyeah, this is a common thing i see among woke webdevs. maybe because their salaries are high for an entry level job, or maybe because they’re bored with how simple webdev is, they feel like if they do their job without questioning things they’re basically nazis “just following orders.” it’s just a job! no gas station attendant will refuse to sell cigarettes because of their moral compass. the actual solution should be a government that protects its citizens with things like gdpr.
- wildrhythms 8y agoI agree with all of this and just want to add that, for every developer who will speak out and crusade against "webpage pollution", there are about a dozen who will not and are viciously seeking employment. I'm often terrified of this.
