I would be very disappointed if we waited to colonize mars for purely practical reasons. Climbing Everest, exploring Antarctica, going to the moon (admittedly debatable), weren't done for only practical reasons.

Climbing Everest had no point. Colonizing Mars might be the only reason humanity exists 1000 years from now.
