- ainar-g 8y agoI agree. His neural networks series[1] was a real eye-opener for me, and whenever someone wants to know how they work, I point them to the playlist. - andrepd 8y agoI enjoyed his one about blockchain even more.
- ehsankia 8y agoI'm a huge fan and a patron too, but I'm curious. He doesn't show his monthly earning but I see he has 5000 patrons. Even at the minimum 1$ tier, that would still be 5000$ a month. While that's not "Youtube rich", I don't think that's "small audience either. I assumed that he had enough backing to comfortably make videos without having to worry about money or sponsors.
- pitaj 8y agoHe's hired a couple of extra staff to help with animation and stuff, so it's likely that he has a good amount of revenue.
- edanm 8y agoFYI, he later decided to go back to working solo.
- majewsky 8y agoSupport is per video, not per month. So that's a minimum $5000 per video. The Youtube channel says "new video every third Friday +/- 1 week", so "per video" is slightly more often than "per month".
- MarkMc 8y ago5000 patrons is good, but YouTube advertising is where the real money is because (a) these math-type of videos have no expiry date; (b) Google are getting better at monetising videos; (c) 3blue1brown is possibly the best videos on the topic and not likely to be beaten by the competition. In 10 years his 'Essence of Calculus' videos will probably earn more money per month than now.
- zaarn 8y agoI think (a) assumes that there is an infinite supply of people interested in watching these kinds of video. In reality, you're going to make most of the money in the first few days after uploading and after that you'll get a trickle of people who find it via search, recommendation or rewatching it from a playlist.
- ehsankia 8y agoSure, I'm sure he gets decent money from ads too. My point was that, I don't see why he needs sponsors in the first place. My 5000$ estimate was a bare bare minimum. Realistically, I would guess around $10k-$15k from Patreon and another $5k from Youtube at least (he has 1M subscribers, which is the "Made it" threshold).
