Some of these behaviors are so benign that any regular person might exhibit these. Slept during the flight, changed clothes, boarded last (I hate standing in those queues), observed the boarding area from afar. Hell I do many of these things. I am sure their "ML" model must have spit these indicators but it's a waste of resources.
- mmaunder 8y agoThey may be establishing a baseline.
- arunmib 8y agoActually I do all of these in all my trips :-/ beyond simple reasons, there is nothing sinister. * Bored in flight - sleep. * Bored at airport - do people watching, good place is look at how people board, watch airplanes take off and land, what is the ground crew doing. * Travel comfortably and lightly - go in shorts and at the destination airport change to formals. * Don't like queue - board last * Want to travel cheap internationally - you would go through cheap airlines like Turkish, Ethihad (or) some unknown airline. * In business trip - do prep work in laptop while in flight. I'm getting more and more annoyed with these baseline establishing stuff and ML models. edit: typo
- koenigdavidmj 8y agoAlso, they capture all ranges of behavior. Glazed over look? Suspicious. Intently paying attention to everything? Suspicious. Friendly? Suspicious. Cold to agents? Suspicious. This is worse than criteria to pull you over when driving.
- polynomial 8y agoExtreme overfitting, where any data point outside the norm is correlated. It makes a kind of perverse sense once you realize the stated point is/was to target extremists.
- onetimemanytime 8y agoTo be fair, they aren't--or shouldn't be--looking for one thing. The idea is that bomber-wannabe comes late, changes clothes, is all nervous, looks for undercover cops etc etc. But if fidgeting or some other innocent thing, puts you in that list, you're f---d. You will be groped every single flight. No one is going to take the risk to remove you from that list.
- amf12 8y ago> To be fair, they aren't--or shouldn't be--looking for one thing. Right, but profiling using these specific patterns will lead to a lot of false positives, which might make this entire exercise a waste of resources, and there is no guarantee that a "terrorist" might exhibit these patterns.
- itronitron 8y agoCheckbox me for having a) boarded last, b) been drenched in sweat, and c) run across the entire airport while having their name called out on the PA system for five minutes.
