It would be nice if Slack took a leaf out of the Hipchat play book and made a native (non-electron) Mac app.
- Kiro 8y agoWhat's wrong with the electron app?
- kidfiji 8y agoI personally don't have a problem with it, but a lot of people have a problem with it taking up a bit of system resources, primarily ram.
- Kiro 8y agoThanks! The only Electron app I use is Visual Studio Code and it works great so was curious. (Crazy btw that I get downvoted to oblivion within seconds for asking an honest question.)
- fernandotakai 8y agoan example -- i currently have 3 workspaces on my slack client (on linux) and it's currently using 500mb of RAM, which is insane for a chat client. the only thing using more ram is firefox with literally 25 tabs, including gmail's inbox and pocketcasts playing a podcast (~1gb).
- rikkus 8y agoYou can reduce this a huge amount by simply using it in a tab in a browser. When I'm travelling I use it this way, as it eats much less battery - I just pin a tab.
- corndoge 8y agoIt reduces the available resources for my dev vms (read: actual work) by a disproportionate amount
- jimmy1 8y agoEspecially if you are signed into multiple workspaces. The performance degradation increases by a factor of two for each workspace I am signed into. That said, there are ways to create performant electron apps (vscode as an example), just seems like slack isn't able to do that for some reason.
- kansface 8y agoIts terrible on memory if you are connected to multiple workplaces.
- saagarjha 8y agoAs others have said, it's not great resources-wise, but it also doesn't fit in well with the OS.
