Facebook events is probably the best after meetup.com, and unlike meetup.com it's free to use. With Facebook it's more about the way you and your friends using it (except privacy concerns). I just unsubscribe from everyone except people/pages who post always on-topic and rarely. I get maybe 2 new posts a day in my FB feed. I waste a lot more time and witness a lot more drama on HN than Facebook.
