This is one of those relatively benign conspiracy theories that's easy to believe, based on what we know about the period, the costs in lives/treasure, the stakes involved, and the people running the world at the time. They needed this win and they needed it to be broadcast on television. Why not believe this conspiracy now? Because extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence... or some evidence, at least.
