The issue is that most of us don't consider harassment to be free speech.
- kryogen1c 8y agoI agree, that is the issue. To be less obtuse, harassment is exactly free speech. No one has a right to not have their feelings hurt and trying to prevent that is a fools errand that can only end badly, usually in death. Every psychologist that treats patients knows you don't help people by making the world be nicer to them, you help them by teaching them to be stronger and more resilient.
- berbec 8y agoThe idea of safe spaces etc doesn't fly with me either. But I'd say harassment as described in this article isn't just being mean. There were death threats. How do you get stronger and more resilient when faced with someone saying they are going to kill you?
- kryogen1c 8y agoDeath threats and calls to violence are illegal and not protected under free speech.
- s73v3r_ 8y agoWhy are you so against the idea of some place where people can go to get a respite from the slings and arrows that are constantly assailed against them? Why do you feel that people should constantly have to be on guard against, say having racial slurs hurled at them every minute of every day? Why are you so against the idea that people should have a space where they can feel safe and not constantly judged?
- berbec 8y agoI'm not against them; I'm against the government enforcing such a thing.
- s73v3r_ 8y agoBut none of any of these discussions involves government, so why would you bring it up? Plus, you yourself said "the idea of safe spaces doesn't fly with [you]," which indicates that you're against them. If you're only wanting to talk about government enforcement, then you might want to say that.
- s73v3r_ 8y ago"To be less obtuse, harassment is exactly free speech" No, it is not. It is not free speech at all. " No one has a right to not have their feelings hurt and trying to prevent that is a fools errand that can only end badly, usually in death." Last I saw, those doing the harassing are usually the ones to try and kill others. See: PizzaGate. Further, you're basically saying that no one should be able to get by in life without being accosted by harassment, so we should give up and all be miserable. "Every psychologist that treats patients knows you don't help people by making the world be nicer to them, you help them by teaching them to be stronger and more resilient." And part of that treatment is having people constantly tell you that your children who were killed in a tragic assault were 'crisis actors' and that the whole thing didn't happen?
