Depending on the season, many, many americans hang their wash out to dry. Certain things affect this; for instance much of the US is too rainy/cold/humid to effectively dry clothes outdoors in a reasonable amount of time all year round. South Australia isn't Buffalo in February, nor is it Seattle in every month not ending in -gust.
