Ask HN: Is “Photo ID and Selfie” identity verification as advanced as it seems?

I have been asking around the computer vision and image analysis experts as to whether ML is advanced enough to execute this, especially the face recognition part. It seems a lot of the companies doing this are just good at the text extraction part from the ID whilst they either hand verify the photo part, if at all. Experts and others, how far true is this? Is computer vision there yet where everything is automated and done in such a short space of time too? Also, ageing and scarring etc
