How playing an instrument benefits the brain
- fenwick67 8y agoAnecdotally I agree that playing music is mentally challenging, but I have a knee-jerk negative reaction to any article that says "music makes you smart".

- TaupeRanger 8y agoThis B.S. has been debunked so many times. Almost all the studies that people point to when they say "music makes you smarter" are poor quality. The overwhelming majority are not randomized or they take place over a short period of time with a small number of participants. The press releases always hype them up way beyond the actual results. There are some good studies that show interesting results, but not enough to say anything definitive.
- tekkk 8y agoSo is this article just referencing musician Glenn Kurtz and TED-ed animation? It would be nice to have the actual research papers linked somewhere too on which these assertions are based on. I mean sure it is plausible that playing instrument benefits the brain just like any activity that exercises it like chess, poker maybe even video games. But how big of an effect it actually is? It's never mentioned on the article nor the video. I'm curious how this even made to the front-page.

- JasonFruit 8y agoThe benefit of playing an instrument is being able to make music. Isn't that enough?
