I've had acceptable results with GeoServer, OpenLayers, OSM, and PostGIS. I've occasionally done proof of concept work with Leaflet, but that's always turned into Google Maps eventually. MapBox isn't perfect yet but I'm eager to see them deliver on engineering... it's been about a year since I've looked.
