Lots of fixes built for Fortnite and none (that I can tell) built for PUBG...
- tomnipotent 8y agoEpic can only speak for Fortnite since it's developed in-house, and it makes sense to point this relationship out considering it was the foundation for all these improvements. Also keep in mind that Fortnite has environmental destruction properties that PUBG doesn't, introducing interesting opportunities for solutions external dev teams may not have the domain expertise to pull off.
- kjeetgill 8y agoInteresting side question: does this conflict of interests have legal implications? If this update hypothetically introduces sufficient performance regressions in PUBG is that legally actionable _because_ they have a competing game? I imagine the level of integration is sufficiently different from the Netflix/AWS situation.
- naikrovek 8y agoFixes and improvements may be implemented because of a particular game, but they are not exclusive to that game. The fixes and improvements made because of FNBR are available to be used by any Unreal licensee.
- throwaway427 8y agoI didn't make my point... Fortnite is driving the engine at this point, PUBG was there first and was massive but has, at this point, ceded to Fortnite. PUBG should be a cautionary tale not just for gaming but for first movers, in general.
- kamikaz1k 8y agoWhy is it a cautionary tale for first movers? From all the popular discourse about PUBG, it seems as though while the game idea and core game play is great, it's terrible in execution. They had ample opportunity to leverage their lead to address their problems, but didn't. This allowed Epic to copy all the desired components, and address the issues as yearned for by the gaming community. I'd say this is more a cautionary tale to people who stumble upon a success. Just because you got there first, doesn't mean you can stop shoveling.
- earenndil 8y agoHow so? PUBG has made billions of dollars, and sold 50 million copies[1]. Seems like they did pretty well to me... EDIT: and the reason fortnite is doing (comparatively) better is that it's free. 1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_gam...
- tomnipotent 8y agoFortnite isn't doing so bad - it made $300MM in April alone. https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/24/17390004/fortnite-battle-royale-money-made-revenue-300-million-april-2018 https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/24/17390004/fortnite-battle-...
- earenndil 8y agoAs I mentioned, fortnite is doing comparatively better. But that's because of a different business model (paid vs f2p+microtransactions).
