I don't begrudge Apple their quest for thin and light. All else being equal, of course everyone wants that.
But they have three portable product lines: the MB, and Air and the Pro. Surely the point of that is to allow them to differentiate? It seems strange that "thin and light" is the priority above all others, for all three.
I'd happily sacrifice a couple of millimetres and a few ounces of my 2016 MBP to a return to the 2015-era keyboard.
- PostThisTooFast 8y agoApple's laptops were "thin and light" enough 10 years ago. Nobody was bitching that Apple products are "too thick." Apple's continued mania for "thinness" is a lame excuse to continually degrade its products, and betrays a total lack of direction or vision. The pathetic keyboard debacle is just the latest example. Apple had already hobbled their glued-together computers with soldered-in RAM and drives, and forced idiotic glossy screens on customers. The no-ports computer was another insult. The "touch bar" is such an embarrassing gimmick that it hardly warrants further comment. Jony Ive should be fired and replaced with someone who has real ideas for IMPROVEMENT, and not simply eliminating functionality and usefulness. Ive is the Trump of product design: Lacking any productive ideas of his own, he seeks only to destroy the achievements of better men.
- nkkollaw 8y agoI'm not sure everyone wants thinnes. I'm working on a 3-cm thick gaming laptop and I'm about 100 times more productive compared to my old 2016 MBP, just because the keyboard actually registeres all keystrokes. I've also upgraded it by opening the bottom case with 4 Phillips screws. People want thinness if everything else works. If to have thinness you have a laptop that you cannot type on, and you lose all your data if the logic boards dies (happened to me with that model), I don't want that.
- nobodyshere 8y agoRight. Backups are for pussies.
- nkkollaw 8y agoI always make automatic, incremental hourly backups. That doesn't mean it's positive for a computer to take your data with it in case of failure when it's completely avoidable (ex., don't have the SSD soldered to the logic board).
