Purging cups is one of the first things I do with a new Linux system. Who the hell even prints anymore from a personal computer?
edit:
also, lol, remember when Linus "vented" about unprivileged users and printing?

- scarface74 8y agoYet another example of - “I haven’t owned a TV in 15 years, do people still watch TV?”
- staticassertion 8y agoOverlap of Linux users and people who need printers is probably at an all time low.
- scarface74 8y agoSeeing that not only does MacOS use CUPS but that Apple owns the source code to CUPS, I think that a security vulnerability in it may be a big deal.
- Karunamon 8y agoAnyone who returns things from an online retailer, for one. Printing tickets at home for movies and shows is also quite common.
- staticassertion 8y agoYeah, to your point, every time this comes up I hate not having a printer.
- FuckOffNeemo 8y agoWe use CUPS on prem to translate print queues from several Finance and HR systems for an up stream Follow-You printing solution with another vendor. CUPS evidently has many applications that are outside of your awareness.
- staticassertion 8y agoYeah, businesses need printers.
- tonyedgecombe 8y agoNot so much now though, printer sales have been in decline for some time (and office paper sales).
- stevehawk 8y agoI can't imagine I'm in the minority when I say, "I do".
- dozzie 8y ago> Who the hell even prints anymore from a personal computer? Dude, I print fsckin' source code to read. I specifically bought an office-grade laser printer with a print server built in so I could do so. I also occasionally print parts of books and helpers for role playing games (character sheets, snippets of the handbooks, tables with prices and test difficulties and whatnot). Printing for personal use is very much alive.
- staticassertion 8y agoIt is fair to say it is alive. Is it fair to say it is alive and well?
