I find myself thinking about whether the comments will have anything interesting in them. If I think there will be then I click on the comments page and read through the top few comments. If there's a lot of discussion about the OP link itself only then will I actually click the link. I do the same for reddit. Side note: I think that there are many articles/blogs on the internet that have less information than a good reddit/HN comment and this is why many users of HN and Reddit go to the comments first.
