It’s not just an issue with fake news. People believe things, both true and false without applying critical thinking.
I recently saw someone objecting to climate change being characterized as a “belief” [1] as it’s a scientific fact. Unfortunately, even with this being the case a large number of people believe in climate change because of their own inherent biases. It’s absolutely possible to hold a belief that is true for the wrong reasons. And in the long term, unless the root causes are addressed equally harmful.
[1] the context was 60% or Americans believing in climate change.

- TheAceOfHearts 8y agoI've found there's a lot of misinformation surrounding climate change discussions. After digging into it a bit I've found that many people that get called """climate change deniers""" are often people that just disagree with what measures should be taken in order to tackle the problem and its relative severity. I think it can often be summed up by the following: is the cure worse than the disease? To give the most extreme of example: there are people which propose we immediately stop using all fossil fuels and it'll somehow magically make the problem go away. That would be unrealistic and it would destroy the global economy. I haven't found a clearly written analysis of the problem which provides a balanced view of its severity along with reasonable proposals for solutions. I'm happy to be proven wrong though. Maybe I'll be among someone's lucky 10,000.
