When my dad was dying it took 4 days after he became unresponsive. They administered morphine all along but not enough in one dose to be fatal. The rattling came on day 2-3, then quieted down. The strange(?) thing was that he lost consciousness and became unresponsive shortly after my brother arrived at the hospital. My brother was the last of the immediate, local family to arrive. My dad acknowledged his presence and in a few minutes was unconscious. Then on the fourth day he passed shortly after his grandkids arrived from the airport.
