The small step from ed to regular expressions seems like a giant leap in sophistication to me.
- sverige 8y agoYes, that innovation gets passed over rather quickly, doesn't it?
- MetaDark 8y agoWell Ken Thompson didn't actually invent the idea of regular expressions, but he was probably one of the first people to implement them in software. Regular languages and expressions were first formalized in 1951 by Stephen Kleene and I assume Ken Thompson used this research to implement them.
