Pakistan is not a democracy, it is run by the military regardless of who is in power, the ISI it's it's real head of state, which have a pro-islamist agenda but with a slightly modern outlook for economic growth. Regardless if he did any wrongdoing, there have been far worse acts by politicians in Pakistan and they have got away with it.
- amingilani 8y agoThat may have been true a few decades ago, but it's certainly becoming more democratic.. still not the best, though. Especially with the military curb circulations of a private national newspaper.
- baybal2 8y agoAttack on Dawn and Geo were first of a kind after 5 years lull. In last 5 years, Pakistan saw, well, nothing less than an explosion in privately owned press and TV channels.
- arif_sohaib 8y agoNot last 5 years. That was mostly under an actual dictator Perviz Musharraff. That period was more democratic than after him which removed all power for local governments and probably more censorship/bans by PEMRA, our media regulatory agency. I think people are too quick to judge other countries through their lens. This is as true for some of us Pakistanis judging to the west through our cultural lens.
- baybal2 8y ago>This is as true for some of us Pakistanis judging to the west through our cultural lens. Am I? Well, media curbs were then and now, but have you noticed a very apparent change in tone? Yes, there were already quite a few private medias by late Musharaf, but back then news section was nearly the same all across them. Aside from the usual aha, aha, nod, nod, in news coverage of the junta, they just varied in kinds of entertainment content. But once Mush was gone, it was only then for the first time in decades that news became somewhat resembling what they are supposed to be.
- iKSv2 8y agoSure its not perfect but its definitely not how it was in my childhood ( The Musharraf days )
- Waterluvian 8y agoDemocracy is more palatable these days because the power it yields to the people can be reclaimed easier than ever through modern technology. Keep the wrong ideas contained through control of media channels, censorship, etc. and you can marginalize the true freedom their vote supposedly provides.
- jessaustin 8y agoI didn't really understand USA until I spent some time considering Pakistan.
- selimthegrim 8y agoThis. Pakistan is a Republican wet dream, if Republicans were Muslim.
- WillPostForFood 8y agoLike Venezuela is a Democrat wet dream? Please...
- crhhybaby 8y agoDid that hurt your little X-ian snowflake feelings? Poor little thing!
- dang 8y agoPlease don't do this here.
- eternalban 8y agoI didn't really understand geopolitical theater until I spent some time considering USA, China, and Pakistan.
- typon 8y agoWhataboutism. Corrupt politicians have ruined Pakistan and all of them should rot in prison regardless of their political affiliations. This also includes the corrupt Army generals and officers who have sucked Pakistan dry for years.
- pknerd 8y agoOur neighbor's democratic PM has a pro-Hinduism agenda despite of heading a secular state. A year back many opposite voices silents who raised questions about the fake surgical strike. What's your point here by the way?
- iamshs 8y agoDude, your law and order has made sure to eliminate all Sikhs not only in Pakistan but even in Afghanistan. Million strong minority has been reduced to mere thousand. Let’s not point fingers here, your dictators have made this whole region a hellhole for minorities.
- pknerd 8y agoThis is not a political forum so I will not continue to reveal further what's been happening in India.
- iamshs 8y agoYeah, now you will sure scoot. It is about holding your government accountable and people like you remain silent because it does not affect you directly. Your comedians pour venom on Sikhs so much that it is just unfathomable where the hate comes from. And it percolates right down the chain. So bring whatever to the debate you can, whataboutism is not going to help you one bit here. You should not have started with the weird defensive attitude then.
- pknerd 8y agoI don't need to run away. I clearly said This is not the forum to flat your bubbles. This is hacker news, not a Republic forum. Thanks for understanding.
- iamshs 8y agoYou sure tried to inflate that bubble though by starting to use this forum, and you know that it was a disingenuous attack.
- nobrains 8y agoThis reply is off-topic, political, flamebait and without references. Not Hacker News material.
- iamshs 8y agoPakistan is not a democracy. That remains a fact. Your constitution has a clause that only a Muslim and a pious one at that can be president or PM. Nawaz Sharif was dismissed because he was not considered a pious Muslim. Imran Khan is a Military stooge who led the charge against him.
- arif_sohaib 8y agoWhy is this on top on Hacker News? The comment is not even about the article. Those are somehow 5 levels down with people talking about Windows Vista. Maybe the liberals are on to something about diversity when comments like this can get to the top because too many tech-industry American-Indians are voting up anything anti-Pakistan in a tech forum when said comment is NOT about tech OR the article. It just contains the name Pakistan and out comes the venom and in come the upvotes supporting the venom on a platform designed to suppress unrelated content.
- yorwba 8y agoYour comment looks like part of the venom. "The top of Hacker News" is determined by a mixture of recency, votes and flags. Everything starts on top and then it's downhill from there. The comment you're responding to has been flagged, by the way.
