Why would they? Who would pay the insane realestate and tax prices plus an hours-long commute? Sure there’s more to do in Chicago, but you’re not doing anything during the week if you’re working ten hours and commuting 3. Better off to live in Wisconsin and visit Chicago on the weekends.
- bilbo0s 8y ago"...Who would pay the insane realestate and tax prices..." Are you talking about the insane property taxes in Wisconsin? Or the insane property taxes in Illinois? Also, unless you live south of Chicago or something, there really is no way I can see it taking you 3 hours to get to Racine even by car. It definitely won't take 3 hours from the north suburbs. And again, that's assuming all the FIB's use their cars. (And even a FIB is smart enough to use the train.)
- weberc2 8y agoChicago residents pay Illinois property taxes, which are quite high. I also didn’t claim it took 3 hours, I said the total time commuting was about 3 hours. In other words, about 1.5 hours each way.
- cozzyd 8y agoRacine and Kenosha Counties appears to have a higher average property tax than e.g. Cook County and nearly equal to neighboring Lake County in Illinois. Of course, that's not the whole picture, as properties are more expensive in nicer areas.
- dredmorbius 8y agoThose high Illinois property taxes are a stealth blessing in keeping property values low, and affordable.
- weberc2 8y agoProperty values in Chicago are anything but low; I don't think high property taxes are doing much to drive them down either.
- dredmorbius 8y agoRelative to what? It's the 3rd largest city in the US. How do land prices compare to NYC, LA, Houston, or SF (ranked 13th).
- weberc2 8y agoRelative to the surrounding area, clearly. No one commutes daily to downtown Chicago from NYC/LA/SF/etc.
- cozzyd 8y agoIs FIB some Wisconsin slang for Illinois residents?
- cozzyd 8y agoAmtrak takes about an hour from downtown Chicago (with its swath of luxury high rises) to Sturtevant station, nearly adjacent to the Foxconn site. Future upgrades conceivably will make it even faster (the track is so straight trains uses to go 100 mph between Chicago and Milwaukee before modern signal requirements limited speed to 79mph). You could also take Amtrak from downtown Milwaukee, but it isn't as well-developed and the two-body problem common for high-level employees is better solved in Chicago (more white-collar employment).
- weberc2 8y agoI don’t know what the two body problem is, but it must be a helluva problem to justify throwing away 2-3 hours each day and tens of thousands of dollars each year.
- cozzyd 8y agoThe two-body problem refers to finding compatible employment for two highly-skilled spouses.
- bilbo0s 8y agoImagine you have a wife/husband who does not want to give up his/her career to go live in middle-of-nowhere Wisconsin. Further imagine that a hypothetical huge city with lots and lots of jobs in that spouse's field happens to be close to middle-of-nowhere Wisconsin where your opportunity is located. Do you A) Demand your spouse move to middle-of-nowhere Wisconsin with you and forego his/her opportunity. B) Move with your spouse to the hypothetical huge city and forego YOUR opportunity. C) Move with your spouse to the hypothetical huge city and simply take the train to your job in middle-of-nowhere Wisconsin. OR D) Move to middle-of-nowhere Wisconsin, demand that your spouse move with you, and further demand he/she take the train to their job in the hypothetical huge city. HINT: On most multiple choice tests, guessing "C" can increase your odds of getting a given question correct even when you are unsure of the correct response.

- goobynight 8y agoHigh level employees don't find the costs of Chicago insane, they like the perks of being in Chicago, will likely work from home/travel to other Foxconn locations a combined 50% of the time. They won't be making that commute daily.
