Isn't it just percentiles? I recall 30-80th percentiles being considered the middle class. 50th percentile household income is around 55-60k. 30th-80th is somewhere around 40-160k/year ish in income. The problem is that "incomes have stayed relatively flat" aka, people were still making the same 40-160k/yr 20-50 years ago, thus they have lost earning power.
