It is worth noting that ruthless time tracking can be massively detrimental to mood/culture/stress and efficiency/productivity/creativeness.
These tools work in an environment IF the culture is balanced "to track results, not effort" and time entry is happily undertaken by all employees because they want to - i.e. they are aware of the benefits:
- notes to refer to later (either themselves, or save someone asking later)
- billing the customer accurately (if appropriate)
- compartmentalisation of tasks (time tracking enables focus and flow on a single activity)
- Entering planned tasks into the time entry, then undertaking them one by one (benefits of planning the task ahead and having everything collated)
- Accountability / Enabling laissez faire - i.e. employees are aware that if they enter their time they are preventing 'hands-on' management (what are you doing? what have you spent your time on?) and preventing authoritarian management.
- Calendaring purposes (time tracking ties in with accurate calendaring and all of its benefits - E.g. good calendaring = calendars are transparent and accurate = employees book out their own time = people don't disturb you at bad times, or double book you with multiple tasks at once).
Without the above, a work atmosphere will become enormously depressing.
