Almost all of these models assume that an "advanced civilization" must have language and radio astronomy and I've always felt that's a rather odd set of parameters. It's completely possible that we haven't found anyone else because we are looking for the wrong things. We are looking for ourselves in the stars and fail to realize that we aren't "it". We may not even be the most advanced species on Earth. When all the dolphins rise out of the ocean and into the sky maybe then we'll realize, but it will be too late.
