More technical advanced meaning they can effectively use all resources on their own planet? Or even further where they can effectively gather all the energy from their star? The only reasons to branch out is because your own star is dying or your population (demand for energy) is growing too fast. Essentially I think that population control is a big hurdle for any advanced species. Which would be the main drive for colonizing space. But at what rate does it grow? After their first star, how long does it take for the next one to be used fully.
