Debt is a very useful tool for transferring money in time at a cost. Like all tools they can be useful, but they can also be taken advantage of and used for harm (or in this case asymmetrically). Yes there are predators that take advantage of others using said tool. Its been known to cause "indentured servitude". But lets not criticize the tool here. This is an issue of governance, and societal scale.
