Software engineers in the valley seem disconnected from reality. Maybe they believe politically correct fairies drop from the heavens and secure the US, it's borders and interests. Or maybe the Taliban and ISIS don't deserve drone attacks.
Whatever their delusion, it's for the good. Military and defense funding yielded everything from the transistor to the internet. Let the next wave of innovation happen outside the smug cesspool of hypocrisy that's silicon valley.
FYI - I'll gladly work for the defense forces sworn to protect our borders as against companies whose very existence relies on slicing axnd dicing personal, private information and interactions, and serving ads against them. Or worse, selling it to the highest bidder and colluding with adversarial powers. Fuck off silicon valley
- FearOfReprisal 8y agoHey what's your name? I keep a blacklist of patriotic amurrikkkans like yourself so I can make sure that if your resume comes across my desk, I'll get to mock you on Instagram before round-filing your application.
- sctb 8y agoNo matter what you're responding to, you need to make your comments more civil and substantive than this. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- mankash666 8y agoI doubt you'd have the time, what with all the fellating you provide ISIS.
- chrisbennet 8y agoUS (wholly avoidable) intervention in Iraq led to the rise of ISIS. The world is not safer when you go around wacking hornets nests.
- Viff 8y agoWhat lead to ISIS was the US pulling out too soon, leaving a huge power gap that the Iraqi government could not fill. Nation building takes decades. Germany and Japan were not rebuilt overnight to become the US' top allies after WWII: they were fully occupied by Allied forces for at least a generation before control was handed back to their respective local governments.
- chrisbennet 8y ago“The reason he bled to death is because they didn’t get him medical attention.” “But you shot him!”
- pixl97 8y agoYes, because he was pointing a gun at someone else.
- malmsteen 8y agoIs isis such a big deal in the grand scheme of things.. ?
- mankash666 8y agoAnd how's that the fault of the military? Go after Rumsfeld and his falsification of intelligence if you have to, the people who gave their lives, and those who continue to put themselves in harm's way for your right to shame them on HN, are not at fault
- pofilat 8y agoA military invasion is performed by the military. No one here is blaming the servicemembers.
- mankash666 8y agoBut you are. The "military" follows the orders of the executive branch. Period. Employees at Google are protesting the military's efforts to advance itself, while their real beef is with the executive branch.

- megous 8y agoYes. Most of ISIS didn't deserve drone attacks. It was a state-like big organization comprised of many diffrent kinds of people who opportunistically, or out of ideology, or by being misled, or under a threat of force, or taken young and brainwashed, joined and helped said organization, which seemed or was in some important cases objectively better than the possible alternatives. Being highly sectarian it was also very horrible to groups of people deemed an underclass. I certainly wouldn't want to live under (in?) ISIS, but that's because I had a luck of being born in a stable country where the government doesn't hate me and doesn't treat me as an underclass, where the police doesn't rob me or beat me,... Many other people had no such luck, and I will not simply say that they deserve to die, just because someone slaps some label on them without any obvious nuance.
- v_lisivka 8y agoYou should go to ISIS and change their ideology, arrest their leaders, protect them from threats, stop brainwashing, lead them to proper direction, and stop any help to ISIS. If it looks easy for you, maybe it really easy. Just do it.
- megous 8y agoYou should go and murder 70 000 people (google Raymond Thomas ISIS) by yourself. It's pretty obvious they all deserved to die, from your armchair. I can play stupid word games too, see.
