I never connected my Switch to the network. Is there some functionality I'm missing?

  the E-shop and system updates mostly. If you don't care about either of those it's not a big deal to not have your switch networked. sidenote: I love how the switch deals with system updates, from a user perspective they take less than 3 seconds.
