I think search has worsened for the layman, but improved for the average, non technical user. My theory is that the ML powering search functionality is, predictably, learning to match the largest body of data, at the coat of niche and/or technical results. It is an emergent form of consolidation. Personally, I feel this slow march began when google removed special search characters.
