But there are many other magical widgets out there ... You don't need to have any sort of major contributions. It does help to have some small patch or patches in, that show that a) you enjoy working with the community with all its quirks b) that you are successful. IIRC the patch that got me my first job offers to work on PostgreSQL was a day's work or such.
