There are patent groups you can buy into (with costs being less if you have helpful patents to share) and then use a shared patent portfolio to defend yourself. It isn't a startup because it needs a lot of resources and the patent portfolio isn't very useful against patent trolls because they intentionally have no production that could be infringing on anything. But I think they also act as insurance for defense costs.
