Ask HN: What is the title of this sci-fi book

I once read a comment on HN where someone talked about a book they read. Something along the lines of how for every person the protagonist meets, a version of them is created & one day he finally meets a different version of himself that he couldn't recognize. Been searching Google for hours now. Thanks in advance.
