So glad this post came along. I was just thinking the other day that I am truly in favor of Apple splitting with one part iPhone and the other Macs. I really think that will bring back innovation in Mac hardware.

Once that is in place, you can truly have a single binary from phone to tablet to laptop. And once that is possible, you can start to do system-level tricks with their tight control over the entire stack like checkpoint restart between radically different devices. Simple example: I start a Mosh session to support a customer inside iTerm 2 on a Mac, and a couple hours later my train return home is arriving in about 30 minutes, I slide the session over to my tablet, continue seamlessly on the train. Thankfully the troubleshooting points to a different team, but I want to monitor the screen share on my phone while I'm at the pub down the street from my home, so I slide the session over to the phone. Completely friction-less form-factor changes, with even the possibility to fork between devices instead of exec'ing. Then you could fork to your watch, which buzzes you when someone mentions your name in a Slack window on your Mac/tablet/phone. Fully cooperative applications between devices also possible, with much reduced smokestacks.
