It sounds like you likely have no firearm experience or friends/family who carry concealed. No one I know with a concealed carry permit hopes to have to use their firearm for self defense. Just like with other groups that carry firearms (police/military) there will be outliers who, as you say, aspire to shoot someone and make the rest look bad. However, the majority of people who carry concealed are certainly not running around trying to find someone to shoot. My grandfather has carried a concealed firearm his entire life and never has never drawn or fired in a self defense situation
- HarryHirsch 8y agoHeh. The guy from Slate Star Codex introduced a value for "Southernness" when he tried to model firearm deaths. So it would be interesting to hear where parent and grandparent poster are from. Atlanta is, of course, in the South.
- danielvf 8y agoI dug that article up - really interesting read, and seems pretty accurate. (Warning: long) http://slatestarcodex.com/2016/01/06/guns-and-states/ http://slatestarcodex.com/2016/01/06/guns-and-states/

- kyleblarson 8y agoThis is correct. De-escalation is a major part of most CCW courses, and additionally many states have duty to retreat laws on the books. But it's much easier to hyperbolically mislabel a predominantly law abiding group of citizens than to address one's own ignorance.
