In a few years strip malls will be occupied only by food businesses, pharmacies, check cashing places, and urgent care clinics.

  You forgot mattress stores.
  • Reedx 8y ago
No joke. The Freakonomics Podcast had an interesting episode about mattress stores and why there are so many - http://freakonomics.com/podcast/mattress-store-bubble/ http://freakonomics.com/podcast/mattress-store-bubble/

Nope that shit is getting disrupted. Ultimately mattresses will come from amazon.
    • toomuchtodo 8y ago
After buying a Serta from Amazon and a Tuft and Needle, I will never buy a mattress again without being able to lay on it first. Disrupted? Try to fit a king foam mattress back in the box to meet return obligations when you don’t like it, before we touch on the counterfeit product issue from Amazon.
      • coding123 8y ago
T&N just needs to know you donated it with a proof of donation. No back in the box needed.

What sort of places accept mattress donations? I know mattresses are not accepted by most thrift shops like Goodwill. Not only that, but you'd have to get the charity to come to your house and pick it up.

Is “Certa” a typo (for “Serta”) or some kind of knock off? I’ve had great experiences with buying mattresses online. The secret is to have friends with a variety of mattresses so that their homes become your showroom.
        • toomuchtodo 8y ago
Typo fixed. Gracias! None of my friends are local unfortunately.
          • koolba 8y ago
For the name brand mattresses best to go local with either Sleepys (or whatever it’s called now) or Sears. The margins on mattresses are insane so you can haggle them down quite a bit. Only chumps pay for shipping or box springs.

That's an absolutely horrible option compared to going to a mattress store and trying different ones for yourself.
      • oh_sigh 8y ago
The problem with this is the most common problem I see in mattresses isn't how comfortable they are initially, but how comfortable they are after 9 months of sleeping in a very similar position night after night.
      • xapata 8y ago
IKEA has some good mattresses that you can try in the store. And many are roll-packed for easy transport from the store.

I think ultimately Amazon will be the thing to be disrupted.

you forgot "internet cafes" - meaning gambling storefronts.
  • ascagnel_ 8y ago
Internet cafes/PC baangs never really caught on in the US -- home connectivity spread much faster and supplanted the need for such businesses in wealthier areas, and shared resources like public libraries serve less well-heeled areas.

got downvoted, and.... realizing that this may be more of a regional thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweepstakes_parlor https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweepstakes_parlor and https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/03/24/stateline-illegal-gambling-internet-cafes/6829731/ https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/03/24/statel... this is a big thing in north carolina areas. It's basically nothing to do with internet cafes that you'd find (or have found) in Europe. These are just sweepstakes/gambling places that have the words "internet cafe" on the door.

  > pharmacies Anecdotally, a guy at the gym I frequent is a commercial real estate broker of some sort, and according to him shopping plazas with CVS/Walgreens as headliners are selling at a discount to comparables, as the market figured out that if Amazon didn’t enter the pharmaceutical retail sector this year, they will next year.

Don't forget spas and nail salons!
  • cardiffspaceman 8y ago
How do nail salons and the like afford to stay in strip malls when KFC shops can't even make rent anymore?
