For what it's worth, the book is excellent, and very in-depth. You're correct that this is just a glorified advertisement for the book, though.

- jpz 8y agoIt's a podcast interview with an author - how is that an "advertisement"? Interviewing an author about his book in a culture magazine is a legitimate journalistic exercise, and it is expected that his research and publications will be heavily mentioned in such an interview. Carreyou workes for WSJ, Vanity Fair is owned by Conde Nast, and his book is published by Double Day. I don't see where you see some kind of implied promotional exercise, given all of these corporate entities have distinct, non-overlapping ownership.
