Alexa and Google Home are simple chat bots. Say something and get a single, reasonably accurate response. They seem to be doing pretty well. The little chat bot widgets never took off because they didn't solve NLP anywhere near as well as Amazon or Google did. If a next gen chat bot can make a dinner reservation over the phone (like Google's demo), it definitely will be the next big thing. So much of our day is communicating and if we can automate our communication effectively, it opens the doors for even greater productivity.
