I don't understand why they would issue any statement other than, 'condolences, we're committed to safety, we're working with the NTSB to understand what happened'
- debt 8y agoBecause Musk views people as crustaceans rather than human beings.
- jumelles 8y agoIt's hubris.
- xab9 8y agoMoney.
- Maybestring 8y agoI'm not sure it's in Tesla's financial interest. Misleading statements give the plaintiffs more room to argue for punitive damages, and California juries have awarded tremendous punitive damages on auto companies.
- xab9 8y agoTesla is a symbol, Musk is a strong personality. To me it's the same as when Jobs said during the antenna fiasco that "you're holding it wrong". Being a symbol, being an entity that creates objects of desire is financially beneficial to the company. The question is, who's message will the potential customers hear: the NTSB's or Musk's? Of course I'm not saying that this is a good strategy - Tesla may as well fall from grace eventually, but the bully is ultimately powered by greed and hunger - for adoration, for money, for financial gains.
- aero142 8y agoI think Musk strongly believes that flipping the switch to sacrifice 1 and save 5 in the trolley problem is clearly the correct choice. If the numbers show that less people die with self driving cars than with them, then that is the right choice. I suspect he even believes that the people that die along the way in the transitional periods are worth it if that is what it takes to save hundreds of thousands of lives in the long run. Most people aren't ok with this kind of utilitarianism, but I suspect he is. The PR is just another tool of keeping people from banning self driving cars before they get to the place where they are really ready.
- jonhendry18 8y agoExcept it's something more petty, like his ego is too invested in not using LIDAR.
- utopcell 8y agoWho is going to report these statistics ? Would you trust such a statement coming out of Tesla right now ?
- lozenge 8y agoUnfortunately the "balance" in the news means they will keep reporting Tesla's statements and will rarely point out how dishonest they have been in the past.
