I wonder if there's a way to put all this engineering thought into reducing/simplifying standards and optimizing compilers so that individuals don't need a Linus-level knowledge. In my opinion, the knowledge-cost of a system is a major downside that is often ignored (probably the biggest downside of unix, vi, git).
