I've tried making the jump a few times with a desktop computer. I lost probably two weeks to debugging issues between Ubuntu and my hardware. Finally got everything working, not perfect, but acceptable. Then I replaced my monitor with a 4k monitor and all hell broke loose again. Linux is great, and I plan on trying it again, but make sure your hardware is compatible.
