I got a Dell Precision 5520 back in February or March. This is basically an XPS 15" Developer edition, if such a thing existed; it came with Ubuntu and so far I have not faced any insurmountable technical difficulties. I find I spend less time screwing around on the laptop in general, and the time I do spend, is somewhat more productive, so I'm very pleased with the result. I like the modern Ubuntu. What do I miss? The touchpad. iTerm. Mail.app. One clipboard. That's about it, and not that strongly. A pitfall you'll want to avoid: use the xinput driver, not synaptics, which is way, way too sensitive. I think this issue is resolved in Ubuntu 18.04 anyway though, so you may not even run into it.
