Software is about design, not algorithms (by and large). There are lots of design problems you can work on. The major issue is that this is as much a people problem as it is a technical problem. If you want to work on something interesting, you will have to transform your skill set. And yes, gluing together libraries is part of the problem. How do you solve that problem. And no, your CS degree will not help you in the slightest.
