I just graduated college and pretty much all of my friends and everyone I knew there used Messenger as default for text communication. There's plenty of other alternatives, but that's what people seem to prefer. It's a pretty decent app and in my opinion way better than the old built in FB messaging. I'd prefer to use Signal and my family uses it to communicate but it's definitely not as nice as Messenger.
